CURIOSITIES

Robert Guiscard, born around 1015, was a Norman adventurer known for his conquests in southern Italy and Sicily during the 11th century. He was the son of Tancred of Hauteville and the sixth of twelve children. Guiscard arrived in Italy around 1047, where he initially served as a mercenary before establishing himself as a skilled military leader.
In 1059, he was named Duke of Apulia and Calabria by Pope Nicholas II and later Lord of Sicily. His military campaigns were marked by the expulsion of the Byzantines from Italy and his support for a reformist papacy. Guiscard also laid the foundations for the emergence of a new Norman Kingdom in Sicily, which was consolidated around 1130.
He died on 17 July 1085, near Cephalonia, Greece, leaving a significant legacy in medieval European history.
